(Due Friday, November 22nd):

Read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People           Chapter entitled Habit 6 Synergize

                                                                                     Teen version pages 182-202

Read Speak Like Churchill, Stand Like Lincoln         Chapters 11 & 12

Choose any ONE historical speech (one that is recognized as having historical significance), print it out, read it MANY times (bonus points if you can memorize any or all of it!) and be prepared to present it to the group at our next meeting.  Please review it enough so that you are not just reading it aloud.  I am not expecting you to actually memorize the whole speech but you should know it well enough to not be stumbling over difficult words and be able to make eye contact frequently.

Read The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin         Chapters 16-19

Read til the end of chapter 19 which is the END of the autobiography.  It will say: He however having done it at the Instance of the General and for his Majesty’s service, and having some powerful Interest at Court, despised the Threats, and they were never put in Execution.  Some version will actually state: Unfinished.  He in fact never finished it.

Socratic Core

(Due Thursday, October 24th)

Read Do Hard Things Chapter 7

Reading of Animal Farm by George Orwell to be completed by October 31st.  Remember to highlight (if you own it and your parent says it's ok) OR write down any phrases that strike you as important, inspiring, confusing... anything either worth remembering or discussing.

Read handout entitled A Letter to God

Leadership

(Due Friday, October 25th):

Read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People           Chapter entitled Habit 4 Think Win-Win (Begin at Paradigms of Interdependence pg 185)

(Teen version pages 146-162)
Also Read:  The Relationship Bank Account in Teen book pages 132-143

Read Speak Like Churchill, Stand Like Lincoln          Chapters 7 & 8

Read The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin      Chapters 10-12

For those without chapter divisions, read until Franklin talks about Rum!  There are references to the Indians drinking liquor (before the age of political correctness).  Read until the statement “The great Spirit who made all things made every thing for some use, and whatever use he designed any thing for, that use it should always be put to. Now, when he made rum, he said LET THIS BE FOR THE INDIANS TO GET DRUNK WITH.  And it must be so.”  I figured this statement would catch the kids’ attention so it’s a good place to tell them to stop!  (We’ll briefly discuss the appropriateness of these ideas...)

Begin reading Three Against Hitler by Rudi Wobbe.  This will only need to be completed by November 8th but since you have a week off next week, I thought some of you might want to begin this one as well.  It’s the longest novel we will read this semester.  A page-turner but lengthy nonetheless so give yourself enough time.
